Black History Month

Each February, schools across the country recognize Black History Month — a time to honor the achievements, leadership, and lasting impact of Black Americans throughout history.

At Creative Technologies Academy, this month offers our students an opportunity to learn more deeply, think critically, and grow as engaged members of their community.

Why Black History Month Matters in Schools

Black History Month began as an effort to ensure Black history was taught in schools and recognized as an essential part of American history. Today, it serves as a reminder that understanding our nation’s full story helps students become informed, thoughtful leaders.

In K–12 education, this month encourages students to explore:

  • Leaders who advanced civil rights and equality

  • Innovators who shaped science and technology

  • Artists and writers who influenced culture

  • Individuals whose perseverance strengthened communities

Through these lessons, students develop empathy, strengthen character, and learn to value diverse perspectives — skills that matter both inside and outside the classroom.

How CTA Students Are Learning and Growing

At CTA, meaningful discussions and shared learning experiences create space for students to engage respectfully and learn from one another. As they explore the contributions of Black leaders, inventors, scientists, and creators, students are encouraged to think independently, pursue excellence, and approach history with honesty and integrity. These conversations strengthen our commitment to fostering a welcoming environment where every student feels valued, heard, and inspired.

Throughout the month, our Superintendent, Mrs. Autumn Mattson, will also visit elementary classrooms to read books, helping bring these historical stories and voices to life for our students.

Continuing the Conversation

While Black History Month is recognized in February, the lessons extend far beyond one month. Understanding history in its full context helps students build leadership skills, strengthen critical thinking, and grow in compassion.

As Nelson Mandela once said:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

At Creative Technologies Academy, we believe education empowers students to lead with knowledge, character, and purpose.
